School Age Special Education Referral

School-age students are referred to the general education intervention team (SIT) by school personnel when academic or behavior progress slows or stops. Parents are notified and involved in the SIT process when a referral is made. Interventions are implemented and data is collected during this process. If growth does not occur or continues to be slow, the student will be referred for a special education evaluation. If a referral is made, parents are contacted, and consent is obtained for a comprehensive evaluation. Results from the evaluation will be used to determine eligibility for special education and related services.

Parents may also initiate a referral for special education screening/evaluation. The need for special education and related services is determined in consultation with parents at each school building site.
